Hit a Home Run

Hit a Home Run

“You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.”

This was the motto of Wayne Gretzky, perhaps the greatest ice hockey player of all time. Another way of putting this quote is to say that every opportunity we pass up, or let slip by in our lives is an opportunity lost.

The fact is, there are opportunities around us all of the time, but the problem is we rarely see them as such. That’s because very often they don’t look like opportunities, just as a diamond in its raw, uncut form doesn’t look like a diamond.

As the saying goes, “Opportunities usually come dressed in work clothes.”

But people don’t pass up opportunities because they are inherently lazy, or disinterested, but because the opportunity might not appear like a guilt edged 100% certainty at the time. They are waiting for that one perfect opportunity to come along – and waiting, and waiting, and waiting…

To use another sporting analogy, in baseball if you want to hit a home run, you have to swing the bat at the ball. Sure you’ll miss a few shots – perhaps most of your shots, but you stand an infinitely better chance of hitting a home run than if you never swing the bat at all. And it’s interesting to note that within the world of baseball, those players with the best home run records are also those with the highest strikeout rates!

So the message is clear – whatever opportunities come your way today, in whatever shape or form, resolve to swing the bat… You never know, today may be the day you hit a home run!

Wishing you luck!
