“We become what we think about.”
This simple notion has underpinned the teachings and messages of great philosophers, writers, religious leaders and many exceptional men and women throughout the course of history, and is heralded today by many as a universal truth… That we do indeed become what we think about most of the time; that our lives are the product of our dominant thoughts.
This quote can be found in the Bible and the teachings of Buddha, as well as more recently by contemporary writers:
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” - Book of Proverbs (also popularised by James Allen in 1902)
“All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.” – Buddha
“You will always attract, positive or negative, people and circumstances that are in harmony with your dominant thoughts.” – Brian Tracy
This is perhaps most popularly known in recent times as “The Law of Attraction”, on the basis that we are like living magnets, and we attract into our lives whatever we focus on, with feeling or emotion, in our habitual thought patterns most of the time.
Therefore it follows that it is vitally important for any lasting success in your life that you keep your thoughts on those things that you most want and desire in your life, and off those things that you don’t.
This can be summed up in the phrase, “The rich become richer and the poor become poorer”, because each group focuses on what they have, rather than what they necessarily want.
Whilst this law is well known to many people, and perhaps even generally accepted as a truism, perhaps the most remarkable thing is how few people actually put it to work in their own lives and harness its reputed power to bring about massive improvements in their lives…
